February 27, 2025The AI Action Summit 2025, held at the Grand Palais in Paris, was a defining event in the global artificial intelligence landscape. Leaders from around the world gathered to discuss AI advancements, regulatory frameworks, and ethical considerations. However, one crucial aspect that remained on the sidelines was gender and AI, a topic championed by Dr. Ranjana Kumari and other advocates for women’s rights in technology.
The summit saw major financial commitments, with French President Emmanuel Macron announcing a €109 billion investment in AI. This move underscored Europe’s ambition to be at the forefront of AI development. Meanwhile, global leaders emphasized the need for international collaboration and responsible AI governance. However, India’s lack of commitment to AI investments raised concerns, especially in a world where technological leadership is rapidly shaping the future.
Among the major moments was an unannounced appearance by Elon Musk, who engaged the audience in an impromptu Q&A. Musk’s discussion highlighted the growing influence of AI in everyday life and the need for human-centric advancements.

Despite the enthusiasm for AI’s future, discussions on gender considerations in AI were limited. Dr. Ranjana Kumari, a well-known advocate for women’s rights, and the Women’s Network for Change (WNC) member, highlighted the urgent need to address gender bias in AI technologies and tackle technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). However, these discussions barely made it into the main agenda.
One of the summit’s progressive steps was the Expert Committee on Women’s Rights Online, of which Dr. Ranjana Kumari is a key member. The committee successfully supported five gender-focused AI projects, selected from 140 applications, aimed at creating AI solutions that empower women and ensure digital safety.
The summit’s final declaration acknowledged the need for ethical, safe, and inclusive AI, with a focus on human rights, gender equality, and linguistic diversity. While this was a step in the right direction, gender discussions were overshadowed by broader AI governance and investment priorities.
The AI Action Summit 2025 was an important milestone, but it also highlighted the need for stronger commitments to gender justice in AI development. Technology must serve all communities, and that means ensuring women’s voices are heard in AI governance and innovation.
Dr. Ranjana Kumari’s advocacy serves as a reminder that AI must be built with inclusivity at its core. The future of AI cannot be shaped by a select few, it must be a collective effort that prioritizes fairness, equality, and empowerment for all.
While AI is revolutionizing industries, it must not reinforce existing gender disparities. Leaders, policymakers, and AI developers must work together to create a future where AI serves as a tool for empowerment, not exclusion. Dr. Ranjana Kumari and her fellow advocates have started the conversation, it is now up to the global community to ensure that gender justice remains a priority in AI’s evolution.
