April 17, 2025The 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) is currently taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, bringing together government representatives, civil society organizations, and activists from around the world to discuss pressing gender equality issues. This year, the priority theme focuses on “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.”
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) was established in 1946 as one of the earliest efforts by the United Nations to promote gender equality and women’s rights globally. Initially, its mandate focused on setting international standards and formulating concrete policies to advance women’s social, economic, and political status. Over the decades, CSW has played a crucial role in shaping major milestones in the fight for gender equality, including the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (1979), and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995).
Each year, CSW brings together representatives from governments, NGOs, and activists to assess progress and challenges in gender equality and recommend actions for further advancement. The session provides a critical space to push for stronger policies, resources, and institutional commitments to support women and girls worldwide.
CSW69 serves as a critical platform for shaping global policies and commitments aimed at improving the lives of women and girls. Discussions highlight key issues such as economic inequality, gender-based violence, access to education and healthcare, and the role of institutions in fostering inclusive development. With participants from diverse backgrounds, the session facilitates meaningful dialogues and the exchange of best practices to drive forward progress in gender equity.
Key Highlights from CSW69
- Focus on Women’s Economic Empowerment: Leaders and experts emphasized the urgent need to address the gender pay gap and ensure women’s full participation in the workforce. Sustainable financing and policy initiatives were discussed to promote economic equality.
- Commitment to Gender-Responsive Institutions: Governments reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening institutions that support women’s rights, with a particular focus on legal frameworks, leadership opportunities, and access to justice.
- Addressing the Digital Divide: Several panels explored how the digital gender gap affects women’s access to education, economic opportunities, and political participation. Strategies for bridging this divide were proposed, including policies for equal digital access and literacy programs.
- Tackling Gender-Based Violence: A major focus of CSW69 has been combating violence against women and girls. New initiatives and commitments were announced to strengthen protections, improve legal responses, and provide support for survivors.
