WNC at the CSW69: Advocating for Gender Equality on the Global Stage
March 12, 2025Let’s all support Maryam AKBARI MONFARED, a courageous opponent of the regime in Iran.
Imprisoned in the dungeons of the mullahs and separated from her 3 children for more than 15 YEARS, for demanding accountability from the Iranian regime for the deaths of her brothers and sisters, who were murdered like 30,000 young people, women, and men by their torturers in the summer of 1988.
She was supposed to be released on October 12, 2024.
And yet, she remains imprisoned, as she was sentenced to an additional 3 years after a mock trial that lasted 15 minutes.
LET’S ALL DEMAND HER RELEASE TOGETHER

Background Information:
Maryam Akbari Monfared was born on December 14, 1975, and is the mother of three daughters. She is one of the most resilient female political prisoners who has chosen to live free, without bowing to the mullahs’ dictatorship.
She was taken to Evin Prison “to provide some explanations” at midnight on December 29, 2009, without being able to say goodbye to her daughters. But she never returned home. She was arrested on charges of supporting the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
She was incarcerated for her beliefs and, subsequently, for seeking justice for four of her siblings—her sister and three brothers—who were executed in cold blood by the clerical regime in the 1980s. She was then subjected to more pressure, and three additional years were added to her sentence based on fabricated charges. Her sister, Roghiyeh Akbari Monfared, had an infant daughter when she was sent to the gallows among the prisoners massacred in the summer of 1988.
Maryam Akbari Monfared was arrested on charges of “acting against national security” simply for her political activism and efforts to expose the truth about the 1988 executions. Since her imprisonment, she has endured extreme conditions, including prolonged solitary confinement and inadequate medical care. Yet, she has never wavered in her commitment to fight for the rights of all political prisoners in Iran.
Her story is not an isolated one. Thousands of political prisoners face similar abuse, and it is crucial that we raise our voices in solidarity. Maryam’s fight is a reminder that the struggle for human rights and justice continues, and every action we take can make a difference.
